2018 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship Preview
Posted on September 30 2018
One of the most popular tournaments on the European Tour schedule takes place this week at the home of golf in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championships. Last year, Tyrrell Hatton successfully defended his 2016 championship, winning by three strokes over Ross Fisher. His quest for the three-peat will be a daunting task, with several of last week’s Ryder Cup participants making the trip to St. Andrews. Headlining the field is the reigning U.S. Open and PGA Championship winner Brooks Koepka, and is joined by his teammate Tony Finau, currently 17th in the Official World Golf Rankings. Other notables include former Alfred Dunhill Links Championship winners Martin Kaymer and Oliver Wilson, as well as recent European Tour winners Matthew Fitzpatrick and Matt Wallace.
The tournament this week is very similar to the PGA Tour’s Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Celebrities, business tycoons, famous athletes and avid golfers all team with a professional in a separate competition played on three golf courses: The Old Course at St. Andrews, Carnoustie Golf Links (which hosted this year’s Open Championship, and Kingsbarns Golf Links.
Players to Watch:
Tommy Fleetwood: His great play in the Ryder Cup team matches should serve as a catalyst for Fleetwood as he enters the final stretch of the Race to Dubai. Currently third in the standings, look for him to make his presence felt on the leaderboard this week.
Thorbjørn Olesen: He has had steady results in the last few weeks, and a win earlier in the summer, Olesen will be eager to cap off a dream season with a strong showing this week in Scotland. Don’t be surprised to see his name near the top come Sunday.
